THE winning photograph in the inaugural Kiama and District Chamber of Commerce photo competition took its creator two years to get.

Michael Stoboi’s stunning picture of the Kiama post office by night was judged the best from a range of outstanding entries taken by talented amateur photographers.

Mr Stoboi said he snapped it on a whim at about 5 o’clock one morning, after choosing the post office over his initial subjects of the police station and courthouse.

“It can be taken only about two months in the year because that’s the only time when the moon is in the right place for the post office and then you have to wait for the clouds to be right,” he said.

Mr Stoboi has won a $500 cash prize from the Chamber of Commerce and Kiama Camera House.

Chamber president Warwick Colbron was delighted with the response and said the standard of entries was extremely high.

Runner-up was Betty Roberston, with a photo of two white horses, and third went to Sarah Potts for her picture of the palm trees by Kiama Harbour.

They have won Camera House vouchers of $250 and $100, respectively. The encouragement award of $100 went to Sue Dmetreson for her photo of a rustic farmhouse.

The photos from the three grand finalists and encouragement award winner, as well as each of the weekly winners, had been framed and would be on display in Kiama Library from Thursday.
