Kiama Golf Club’s Phil Weir has created club history after scoring a hole-in-one on the club’s sixth hole last week.

Several players have ‘aced’ the sixth in the past, but it was unique in that it makes the 65 year-old Weir the only player in the club’s long history to score a hole-in-one on all eight of the club’s par-three holes.

“I started playing golf here 35 years ago and absolutely love it,” Weir said.

“There is great camaraderie among the members and the course is one of the best I have played at, although it can be brutal.

“With pine trees on either side of the fairways, it is probably a great place for young players to start as you very quickly learn to hit straight.

“In fact I call the trees ‘pinus-interruptus’ because if you are off target you get swallowed up by the trees very quickly,” Weir said.

An A grade player, Weir won the club championship A Grade net title in 2006, while he has represented the club in B Grade pennants and White Horse Cup and in particular likes Masters pennants, which he has been playing for 14 years.

Since retiring last year, Weir plays at Kiama four times a week.

He started his amazing run of holes-in-one in 1986 when he aced the 16th and others have been the fourth (1988), 17th (1991), 13th (1992), 11th (2001), ninth and 14th (2009) before making it a clean-sweep on the 6th last week.

He paid special tribute to former club captain, the legendary late Jack Brewster, who scored 17 holes-in-one during his career, but never managed to ace the 13th.

Following Jack’s passing, the club laid a special plaque on the 13th tee in memory of the club’s former captain and his golfing deeds.
