Kiama touch star Amy Regal has capped a superb season with selection in the Australian Women’s 20s team to play New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman series in January.
Nineteen year-old Amy, who first played touch with Kiama Stingrays as a four year-old, has for years been one of the real bright stars on the touch horizon, before learning of her selection last week.
The year has been one of constant highlights, which has included a NSW Combined High School’s Blue for touch and then the Betty Bowen Award as the top female sportsperson in CHS sport. She also won the NSW Touch Association’s Junior Player of the Year.
“Winning the CHS Blue for touch was a huge thrill, but the Betty Bowen Award is such a prestigious one, taking in the Blues Awards from all sports was unbelievable,” Amy said.
Amy has played junior representative touch for Kiama in every age group and also represented Southern Suns (southern NSW) for many years, but this year has again been one of continual highlights.
Representing Wollongong Women’s Open, her team won the Country Championships and made the semi-finals at the State Cup and she played well at the National Touch League to earn a spot in the NSW 20s team that downed Queensland 2-1 in the annual State of Origin clash and was named Player of the Series. Playing in her favourite position of link, her performance saw her selected in the extended squad for the national team. After weeks of trials, she was named in the final team.
“This is a huge thrill and something that I have always dreamed of and I can’t wait to get in action wearing national colours,” Amy said.
Amy will play for Wollongong Women’s Open in the semi-final of the Sydney Championships on Friday.
