JAMBEROO Pub barmaid and licensee Erica Warren-Maurer is U.G.L.Y. and is not afraid to admit it.
This month, Mrs Warren-Maurer will be wearing a T-shirt imprinted with the words “I’m U.G.L.Y. and I need help” to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
U.G.L.Y. stands for Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You and is an initiative organised by the foundation to encourage bar staff from across the country to raise funds for people suffering from lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma.
Mrs Warren-Maurer said she was approached by a girl during a shift at the pub and decided to get involved in the campaign.
By coincidence, Mrs Warren-Maurer’s mother suffered from a rare form of lymphoma.
“I didn’t realise the fundraiser covered lymphoma as well so it was a bit of strange coincidence,” she said.
“Mum died in 2008 from a heart attack, but she had a rare blood disease that has only had 1000 cases recorded in Australia.”
Mrs Warren-Maurer said the campaign was a good one to support and she encouraged pub patrons and the community to get involved.
“I will have tins on the bar through June and I just want to raise as much as possible,” she said.
“I will also be raffling prizes, starting off with a mini-iPod at the end of this week.”
Mrs Warren-Maurer said she had set a target of $3000 to $4000 and had already raised about $630 in the first week of the campaign.
“There are some great prizes up for grabs,” she said.
People wanting to help can buy raffle tickets or put coins in the tins at Jamberoo Pub or sponsor Mrs Warren-Maurer at http://my.imisfriendraising.com.au/personalPage.aspx?registrationID=297553.
