No Shortcuts: Scott Duncan being put through his paces last December. Regular testing sessions will take place during the coming season enabling players to monitor their fitness and push their limits.
KIAMA Rugby Union Club is gearing up for another big year in the Illawarra District Rugby union competition.
While 2006 saw the team defeated in the semi finals by Tech-Tahs, players and coaching staff believe that they had one good match left in them.
Everyone from the coach, the players and the administrators are now using this as extra motivation. Cocoach Peter Asquith believes the challenge lies within.
Its no secret we are trying to raise the bar this year, he said.
It is a natural process to want to get better and we were all extremely pleased with how we went last year.
We are focusing unashamedly on the physical contest and ensuring our players have the mental strength to front up and overcome the more physical games.
Training for the annual Kiama 7s, to be held on Saturday February 24, started two weeks ago and the full squad will commence pre season training this Thursday. The 29 players used for first grade last year are expected to all return. The only major blow being the loss of Wyn September, who is overseas.
Wyn is a big loss as a player and as a character and a person. A major positive is the return of Ryan Gunning (ankle), Ben Blacka (ankle) and Chris Jack (knee) who are all high quality backs, added Asquith.
President Mark Burns has been busy off the field with his hard working committee and is excited about the approaching season.
Its great to be back and this year we are focusing on a new junior development program, which will set us up well for the future, he said.
" First grade winger Glen Hamblin and breakaway Scott Duncan work on their speed off the mark. Duncan is returning after being out injured for the entire 2006 season.
All coaches have been named and we will now focus on a strong pre-season with the sevens coming up in February (24) and a trial day against three teams from Mosman and West Harbour in March, added Mr Burns.
The club will also hold its second annual family day at Jamberoo Action Park on Sunday March 4, while the trial day will serve as a season launch.
The final message to players attending training this Thursday comes from last years Illawarra District Rugby union Coach of the Year, Asquith.
The theme is no shortcuts For me there is no reason we cant create an environment of the highest possible level of club rugby.
Training will start at Blacka Beach from 6.30pm Thursday.
