Kiama High School Captain Mia Burns, School Principal Graeme Sutherland, Kiama MP Matt Brown and school captain Matt Heap checking out the new $5.6 million upgrade.
DESPITE the completion of a major $5.6 million upgrade to Kiama High School the 22 demountable classrooms on the school oval look set to stay for the rest of the year.
Taking up the majority of the grassed areas within the school, 12 of the 22 demountables are scheduled to be removed over the next year.
What the department have agreed to is to move the bulk of the demountables off the oval, school principal Graeme Sutherland told the Kiama Independent.

It is then a matter of jiggling them around the rest of the school ground.
With 1330 students, Kiama High is the biggest school in the Illawarra and South East region which means finding space to locate the demountables could be tricky, forcing the classrooms to stay on the school playing fields.
Meanwhile Kiama MP Matt Brown was on hand yesterday to see the completion of the three-storey upgrade that includes new fitness, performance and visual arts learning facilities, new staff room, covered link ways, as well as conversion work to a number of existing buildings.
Kiama High School is an excellent school and I know staff and students will greatly benefit from these works, Mr Brown said.
The new facilities have been built to the most modern design specifications and equipped with the most up-to-date facilities.
The Iemma Government is providing the students of Kiama with excellent educational facilities. We have spent over $11 million at Kiama High School since 1998.
Kiama High School principal Graeme Sutherland said the new facilities should provide a lot more comfort for both staff and students, a luxury he hopes will provide a far better learning environment.
These are very modern facilities, he said.
Most of our teachers have been used to cramped rooms but these are very ergonomic, state of the art learning facilities.
The new building was built by Camarda & Cantrill.
