Kiama first grade leg spinner Matt OBrien searching for some life out of the Howard Fowles wicket last weekend.
KIAMA first grade cricket captain Matt Meurant is calling for a more disciplined approach from his players after suffering a 105 run defeat at the hands of Lake Illawarra at Howard Fowles Oval last weekend.
Lake were in early trouble at 2/1 in the first over thanks to Dale Scifleet (4/19) with Sam Constantinou (63) settling the Lake Innings, with the support of Brendan White (27), after being dropped early in his innings.
Meurant is calling on a change in attitude and commitment is his players want to improve on last years semi final.
Technically there is no other team better in the competition and we have the potential to beat anyone of them, he said.
Training is really a reflection on how we went on the weekend, the commitment is good when they turn up but it is getting them there that is the struggle.
You have to train like you want to play first grade, a frustrated Meurant added.
The Lakers went on to post 167 and Kiama were never in the hunt in the chase with the loss of consistent wickets and no major partnerships being formed, with skipper Meurant top scoring with 22.
The Cavs will need to lift for their next match in two weeks time with competition favourites Oak Flats, after the Rats produced a clinical display over a rebuilding Jamberoo team at Geoff Shaw Oval.
Despite Meurants early season concerns, Oak Flats captain Kerry Penfold is certain Kiama will be in the hunt come finals time.
It was a good hit out for us on the weekend, said Penfold.
We have kept most of our team from last season, which is good and we still have Matt Counsell and Matt Hundy to come back.
Brad Carey is a loss but the overall strength of the club is there and the way second grade went is pleasing.
I am certain Kiama will be there again after making the semis last year.
I played with Matt (Meurant) in Sydney and I am sure they will be there fighting when they get all players on deck, he added.
