Markets for Gerringong

Section: Community

KIAMA Council has delegated authority to the general manager to decide whether Gerringong Sunrise Rotary Club can hold monthly markets at Gerringong Town Hall.

The club proposed to run markets at the hall from 7am to 2pm on the third Saturday of each month, starting from July 21.

One of the market organisers, Neil Miller, said the original proposal was to have the stalls in the Old School Park, but this was changed after some members went to the Bundanoon markets, which are held indoors.

A maximum of 60 stalls would be accommodated, with 32 inside the hall and another 28 on the surrounding area.

Mr Miller said the markets would bring tourists to the town as well as allow locals to shop at their own markets and find out about local products.

"It will be a once-a-month-thing and if we can use that to raise some more funds, well, there's always more requests for money than money," he said.

The report by the director of environmental services, Andrew Knowlson, said: "The proposed development is considered to be reasonable and conditional approval is recommended."

The council resolved that if consent was granted for the markets, it should be with the conditions that a licence agreement was entered into and that the consent was limited a year long period.
