THE Kiama High School community raised more than $900 for the Leukaemia Foundation with a World’s Greatest Shave event last Thursday.
Three students – brothers Lawrence and Adrian Knight and Joseph Mungovern – and geography teacher Paul Berry had their heads shaved for the fundraiser.
Many more students got wild colours put in their hair by student representative council members for a $2 donation.
The teacher organising the event, Hayley Dean, said the school raised $927.50 in total.
“I was very impressed; that’s a lot more than what we expected,” she said.
“The (SRC members) went round and collected from all the students and a lot of the teachers put donations in as well.”
Lawrence said the cause was personal because he had a friend who had leukaemia for the second time.
“I just wanted to try to help out any way that I could; try to raise some money for the fund,” he said.
Mr Berry had volunteered to get his hair shaved on the proviso the school raised at least $500.
“I thought it was a good cause and to be perfectly honest I thought there’d be other teachers, but I’m the only one,” he said.
His previous experience with short hair was only with a number two razor, never a total shave.
His verdict was that the new hairstyle was “a bit breezy”, but with the added bonus of not having to cut his hair again for a while.
