Kiama’s children will be practising their reeling, sinking and line hooking this week in preparation for the Kiama Children’s Fishing Tournament.

Organised by the Kiama Game Fishing Club, the competition aims to encourage children to take an interest in fishing.

The tournament was established in 2003 and since then has more than tripled in size, Club president Simon Smithers said.

“When we started the competition, we had about 40 kids and last year, we had nearly 150, which is a great number.

“Anymore and there won’t be enough harbour for everyone to fish in!”

Mr Smithers said children are encouraged to release their fish after catching them.

“All the fish that children bring over to be weighed are returned alive back into the harbour to hopefully get bigger for next year’s event,” he said.

“The day is more about the kids enjoying themselves and having fun catching fish rather than the competition itself,” Mr Smithers said.

The event will be held on Sunday (January 18) at Kiama Harbour.

Registration will begin at 8am and fishing will commence at 9am and run until approximately 1pm.

Entry is $5 and children are required to bring their own fishing gear.

For information, contact Simon Smithers on 0409 815 078 or the club on 42 332122.
