KIAMA Lions Club members have presented a specialist mattress to staff at Kiama Hospital.
The Alternating Aircell Mattress is worth $2500 and is used to assist patients confined to their bed for long periods of time at home.
The mattress automatically adjusts to the weight of the patient and changes pressure in the cells of the mattress to reduce the incidence of pressure sores and improve patient comfort.
They inflate and deflate automatically to relieve any pressure, said Kiama Community Nurse Suzanne Alexander
Our community nurses are so grateful for the Clubs assistance to purchase special equipment needed to care for patients in their homes, Ms Alexander said.
Hospital staff were on hand on Monday to demonstrate the new mattress to Lions club members, who donated the proceeds of their Kiama Market coffee and donut stall to pay for the mattress.
