KIAMA Labor MP Matt Brown says the Liberal Party has left their run for the state seat too late, with the Libs still unable to name a replacement candidate for Trevor Fredericks.
They havent shown any interest in the seat over the last four years and I think all of a sudden to choose a candidate and feign interest will not be received well by the general public here, said Mr Brown.
Theyve left their run too late.
Its been almost four weeks since former Liberal candidate Trevor Fredericks pulled out of the election race on July 28 citing poor health.
Since that time several local residents have shown interest in taking on Mr Brown for the state seat the most recent being lifelong Liberal Party member and Kiama resident Patricia Cotter.
I am very keen to run because I enjoy inspiring people, said Mrs Cotter.
I think one of the challenges facing this seat is the ability to generate employment closer to where people live.
She also cited police numbers and road upgrades as important local issues.
The Independent contacted the office of NSW Liberal Leader Peter Debnam on August 14 seeking confirmation that the party would be putting forward a local candidate for the seat.
The Independent is still awaiting an answer on this. Federal member for Gilmore Joanna Gash said the naming of a local person for the candidacy would be a priority for the party.
Mr Brown was dismissive of local interest in the position.
I can see why not many local people wish to be part of Peter Debnams team. Why join NSW Libs when theyve got no plan and no ideas for the state, said Mr Brown.
People dont know who Peter Debnam is and what he stands for and his promises are becoming very reckless.
Mr Brown said he didnt want to sound like a broken record but that his local knowledge and dedication to the area was his strength.
They (voters) need to factor that in, he said.
