MORE than 1500 years ago the art of Kung Fu was developed in the Shaolin Temple in China.

Kung Fu encompasses a wide variety of practices, all of which are still beneficial for the young and not so young today.

The Illawarra Kung Fu Academy teaches a style of Shaolin Kung Fu called Choy Lee Fut and runs classes in both the fighting martial arts and the more therapeutic Qi Gong, a type of Tai Chi.

“The practice of Kung Fu and Qi Gong is not just about self defence and longevity. It is about living in the best possible physical shape, inside and out, as well as in peak mental and emotional condition,” chief instructor Sifu Alan Baxter said.

Sifu Alan is also a fully qualified Personal Trainer.

“I don’t know any other training method that’s as holistic as the Shaolin arts,” he said. “Not to mention as much fun.”

Sifu Alan described Kung Fu as a journey that will enhance a person’s life in many ways, including fitness, strength, balance and flexibility along with featuring many practical self-defence techniques.

Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu is one of the most widely practiced Kung Fu styles inside and outside of China today. It is known for its speed and power, its smooth circular body movements and flexible footwork. Choy Lee Fut emphasises the intelligent use of strength and the combination of external force with internal will.

Lohan Qi Gong (pronounced Chi Kung) uses movement and breath control to manipulate the flow of Chi along the body’s meridians. It is both a physical and mental exercise. Inwardly, it is taught to cultivate the Jing, the Chi and the Shen (the essence, the breath and the spirit).

Qi Gong stimulates the immune system and is excellent for healing inflamed and degenerated tissue.

It also has a calming effect on the nervous system and is beneficial in the treatment of anxiety, insomnia and depression.

“Whether you’re five or 85, there’s something beneficial for everyone in the practice of Kung Fu and Qi Gong,” Mr Baxter said.

The Illawarra Kung Fu Academy has classes for all ages in Kiama and Jamberoo.
