Have the St George Illawarra Dragons got what it takes to go all the way in the 2010 rugby league season?

WE’RE blessed in this community because we have a strong surf-lifesaving movement that hopefully has lots of youngsters coming through to continue the tradition of the bronzed Aussie lifesaver.

Particularly blessed are those whose lives were saved during the holiday period and on Australia Day.

One lucky person was saved at Bombo Beach by a couple of young blokes who happened to have a keen sense of curiosity after a police car passed them on the way to the beach.

Lucky for that swimmer that 15-year olds Fletcher Atkins and Jacob Robinson were brought up on the coast and were obviously experienced enough to know how to handle themselves and the conditions.

Isn’t it disappointing, though, that people still have to put their own lives at risk to rescue others?

Surely common sense would tell you that if you’re not that strong a swimmer you should find a beach that is patrolled by experienced lifeguards or lifesavers.

I think there’s also a danger that some people tend to swim fully clothed. That practice could be a cultural thing, and fair enough, but there’s no doubt a full suit of wet clothes is going to make swimming all the more difficult and tiring should you get caught in a rip or some other surf hazard.

Add alcohol to the mix, which is what one young girl did at Surf Beach on Australia Day, and you have an accident waiting to happen.

Full kudos to our surf-lifesavers – you are all heroes.

And another thing..Once again I notice that a business has gone leaving huge debts behind to reappear in another guise and trade once again. When is the goverment going to wise up to these cowboys and legislate to protect small business from people with BIG Ideas and SMALL business management skills..C.T.Kiama
