MAMMAL’S Zane Rosanoski believes his band remaining strictly independent has enabled them to establish a more dedicated fan base.

This included touring the country extensively for two years before releasing their debut full-length album, The Majority, last year.

“We’ve built our fan base organically rather than being forced down people’s throats,” the drummer said.

“It’s taken longer then if we were signed to a (major) label, but I think our supporters are a lot more diehard and will rock up to every show. Not a lot of bands have that.”

The Melbourne hard rock act’s shows, led by livewire frontman Ezekiel Ox, have a reputation for being high-energy affairs, which complements their music’s funky, up-tempo vibe.

“We’re real and it’s a real energy, as opposed to faking it, because people can see right through it otherwise,” Rosanoski said.

Having an enigmatic frontman who seems to have unlimited energy and is never short of a spot of socio-political banter on-stage probably helps their cause too.

“I’ve been in a band with him for three years and I’m still trying to get to know him,” the sticksman laughed. “His energies are so potent, to catch his drift is quite hard.”

In addition to their own headlining shows, they’ve graced the stages of festivals such as the Big Day Out.

“We had 10,000 people there loving it and it was just a perfect moment in time, the kind of thing you dream of. When you’re a kid and you think that maybe one day you’ll play the Big Day Out… it was great in every way,” Rosanoski said.

Their upcoming tour will be Mammal’s first proper jaunt into regional areas and Rosanoski was excited by the prospect.

“We usually just do the capital cities. If you haven’t seen us before, it’ll be high impact, in-your-face and sweaty and you’ll leave with a massive smile on your face and be back for more next time.”
