Gerringong Cricket Club’s Under 14 side dusted of the cobwebs after the Christmas break to play Shellharbour Blue on Saturday at Athol Noble Oval.

Gerringong won the toss and elected to bat. Jake Henderson and Brendan Quinn took on the new ball and were solid until Quinn was caught. Will Bland survived some good bowling before he was bowled and the Jets were in trouble at 2 for 10.

Captain Zac Young and Henderson then consolidating the innings with some sensible batting which produced a 38 run partnership before Henderson was caught for a solid 18.

Sam Glover strode to the crease with some good back yard cricket form from the summer and didn’t disappoint. The Glover and Young partnership was also 38 runs before Young was out for 38. Glover was unlucky that drinks came along as he was out just after the break for an impressive 48 which included seven fours.

The bottom half of the order tried to keep the scoring moving quickly before Gerringong were all out for 146.

Shellharbour are in some trouble at 3 for 29 at the close of play after a good spell of bowling from Zac Young who finished the day with all three wickets. He was assisted by Jake Taylor and Danny Wedd who both bowled tightly with two maidens each.

Gerringong will be looking for early wickets next week to consolidate on the good start.

The combined Gerringong Oak Flats Under 16 team travelled to Gibson Park to take on Wests Illawarra in a one day game.

The team bowled well to contain Wests to 3 for 91 after their 30 overs with Callum Downes, Max Burn-Nelson and Tom Williams all taking wickets.

The combined team started the run chase well with Downes 10, Mitch Crowshaw six, Ryan Korenz 21, Ben Morrow 21 and Burn-Nelson 20.

However a mini collapse with the target in sight saw the visitors slump from a comfortable 5/89 to be 8/90.

Fortunately Trudy Burke and Tom Williams showed cool heads and they passed the required score without further dramas.

This side continues to improve and coach Grey has high hopes of a semi final berth.
