KIAMA Stingrays continued tradition and once again hosted a very successful gala day last Sunday at Kiama Leisure Centre Sporting Fields.
The weather was hot but nowhere near as hot as the action was on the field.
39 teams weaved their magic and displayed their skills at entertaining the large crowds.
The Local volunteers from St Johns Ambulance were kept very busy on the day with many players coming off the main field looking like coal miners after the councils decision to top dress the fields this week, however this didnt stop these fine athletes from putting their bodies on the line to score and save touchdowns.
There was a total of 60 games played overall during the day which was the perfect hit out before the Junior State Cup, which is being held on the 17th and 18th at Thomas Dalton Park in Wollongong.
" Keeleigh McCauley turns it on at the Stingrays Junior Gala day last Sunday.
There were some very pleasing results for the Stingrays, with the Under 10 Girls & Boys, Under 12 Girls & Boys all going through the day undefeated.
All the other Stingrays teams performed well on the day and the coaches of all teams were able to do some much needed fine tuning before the big day arrives in two weeks.
Junior State Cup has a record number of teams entered this year being 288 teams from 49 affiliates throughout the state.
Games will start at 8am and will run through until around 6pm on the Saturday taking up around 25 fields continuously and on Sunday last round games and finals will be played.
A big thank you to all dedicated referees and volunteers who worked tirelessly all day and also to all the teams that participated, to help make it an incident free day.
Meanwhile, Stingrays action from Monday produces many intersting results.
Boys 7-9 years
Scoops Ice Creamery 5 def Dentworks 1
Another good win for the boys from Scoops. Being involved in the Stingrays Rep sides must be making a difference with many of our new kids improving each week.
Broc Flanagan in our under 10 boys crossed for two touchdowns whilst Jai Field got the trifecta.
The Dentworks team put in a good effort against the hard running scoops side. Great touches from Josh Norris and under 10 rep player Blake Maples.
Jarrod Rickard also in the under 10 rep side must have benefited from our gala day on Sunday as he scored the only try by beating a couple of would be defenders.
Kiama Toyworld 2 Stingrays 2
The Toyworld boys had great match which was a close fought draw. Touchdowns to Cameron Taylor and Tyan Timbs.
Super attack by Joey Timbs, Angus Males, Elijah Crowe and Jack Sampson.
Wonderful defence by Ryan Micallef, Thomas Murray, JarrodPurvis and Patrick Rankin. Well done boys.
A very good game to the Stingrays with lots of passing and the score of two each was proof of how tight the game was.
Single touchdowns to Kurtis Bailey and another young member of our boys 10s rep side Dylan Morris.
Pirtek Illawara 6 def Burnett Trees 1
All the Pirtek players had a fantastic game. Joshua Oxley, Joshua Gomes, Lucas Anderson and Che Stubbs all scored great touchdowns.
Nicolas Wingrove and Joshua Spain did some great runs with Mitchell Bartolotta and Owen Sutherland wonderful in defence.
Best defensive game of our season particularly from Toby Behl-Shanks, Ryan Kohlenberg, Lchlan Bowman and Ben Cunningham. Fantastic running from Charlie Burnett and Bjorn Myers.
Beach Bodz 6 def Kearns & Garside 0
Good game from all the Beach Bodz boys all the team played extremely well. The whole team defended very well throughout the game.
Lyndon McDonald and Joel Young both crossed for a single touchdown whilst Mitchell Scott and Harrison Lowe both bagged a double.
Against a slick opposition the Kearns & Garside boys didnt seem to have the firepower on the day to match Beach Bodz.
The team never gave up and kept defending right until the hooter went.
Our attack was a little rusty with some of the boys not having played since the Christmas break. Mitchell Weston was the teams best on the day.
