Kiama resident Aviva Sheb’a is certainly no shrinking violet, as patrons will discover this weekend as she shares stories, music and her unique style of vocal dance in her one-woman show Shebada!

Ms She’ba said the performance would be a good balance of serious and funny skits.

Shebada! is on Saturday, November 22 at 7.30pm at the Kiama Uniting Church.

“This is a new show in a new format and it is definitely something that people haven’t seen before.”

“I will showcase Dame Belly Nelba, which is a very, very funny act and when I’ve performed it before, there wasn’t a dry knicker in the house,” she said.

“People can also expect to hear some stories about my time in Vietnam – these stories cover some pretty heavy stuff but they are not uncomfortable and are balanced with laughter.”

Ms Sheba has had an interest in performing from a young age, taking up dancing as a child.

“I was a very sickly child with asthma so I started dancing and it saved my life and later on became my profession,” she said.

“I studied acting and singing as well and just found that I loved performing.”

Ms Sheba has led a fascinating life and she loves regaling audiences with tales from her time entertaining the troops in Vietnam, performing with the Italian Operetta Company and working in the Amsterdam jazz scene.

Audience members will also get the chance to hear Ms Sheba’s vocal dance techniques, which she established and developed.

“Vocal dance enables the dancer, whether professional or recreational, to find a balance of suppleness, strength, and beauty using movement and sound,” she said.

“The inhibitions many people face in using the voice with dance soon dissolve, allowing a broad range of expression.”

The show will also feature performances by the Kiama Women’s peace choir, Shunyata.

“They do two numbers at the start and then we come together at the end so it is going to be great,” Ms Sheba said.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for concessions.

Guests are invited to a “meet the artist” forum after the performance and to try their hand at vocal dance in a mini-workshop.
