JOANNA Gash has come through on her promise of funding for the Kiama Showground Pavilion.

Yesterday, the Member for Gilmore announced the Federal Government would give the council $1 million for the project.

The funds come in the form of a grant through the regional partnerships program.

Mayor Sandra McCarthy said she was very happy to have this portion of funding confirmed.

"I think this is great that Joanna Gash has followed up and given us this funding," she said.

The upgrade of the pavilion will cost $4.5 million. The council will received a low rate loan from the State Government for $2.5 million, to be repaid over the next 12 years, providing it can come up with the balance of funds for the project.

It is still seeking a $1 million grant from the State Government to make up this balance.

"We're hopeful (of getting that grant), but council are committed. We will start work in 2008 after the 160th show," Cr McCarthy said.

Council general manager Michael Forsyth said the Federal Government's commitment proved the pavilion upgrade was a project that deserved funding.

Mrs Gash said it was an honour to have been lobbying on behalf of the Kiama community.
