First year trainee Glenn Davis (left) and Kiama Golf Professional Mr Greg Drummond are gearing up for the Trainee Professional Event next Monday at Kiama Golf Course.

Monday, April 24th will see 60 of the most talented Trainee Golf Professionals; converge on the challenging Kiama course from across NSW to compete in the Centenary Trainee Professional Tournament.

Players will tee off for a share of the $6,000 prize money, proving that community support from Illawarra business houses for the event, has made it one of the highest prize purse for events of its kind, outside the state and National majors.

A plus for the region is rising star and first year trainee at Kiama Golf Club, Glenn Davis, will get to compete on his home course. Davis has a host of senior and junior club championships at the club and is in sizzling form after jumping up the rankings by five positions in the past two weeks.

Davis will come up against long hitting left-hander, Julian Reynolds of Windsor, currently ranked at the top of the order of merit after winning it in his first year (2005) as a trainee. Corinne Furnell from Penrith Golf Club is one of five girls entered in the tournament, in her last year a as trainee and is looking set for a promising professional career, having competed in this years Australian Ladies Masters Tournament.

Despite the tough competition Davis has is confident about his chances, and is looking forward to the tournament.

I am backing myself to go well but the main thing is the experience from each tournament I play he said

To be selected to become a trainee the golfer must have a handicap of three or less, have a passion for Golf, pass an entrance exam and sit though a series of interviews. At the completion of the three years Professionals have the option of pursuing a playing career or become a club professional anywhere in the world.

At this stage playing aspirations are in Glenns long-term plans.

I have two years to go and am focused on giving myself the best opportunity for a playing career, he added.

Kiama Professional of 15 years, Mr Greg Drummond is a former NSW club Professional of the Year (1998) and is Triple A rated with the PGA, the highest recognised level for a Golf professional, sees a potential and work ethic in Glenn that has made him the most decorated young golfer in Kiamas history.

Glenns record speaks for itself, he works hard, is dedicated and he has a great swing. His experience will count and we could see a breakthrough win

The Kiama Club is also gearing up for the Diane Hogan Childrens Cancer fund Charity Golf Day this Friday, an event, which Drummond has seen, evolve. It is a great event held in Dianes memory, the profile increases every year and Kiama Golf Club and golfing community look forward to it he said.
