When it comes to winning, Jamberoo Bowling Club singles champion Danny Keenan certainly doesn’t let superstition stand in the way after taking out his 13th club championship last week.

Fifty-year-old Keenan downed up-and-comer Cameron Baker in a thrilling final 31-26 that had the big gallery on the edge of their seats to give him his latest title, but he doesn’t take anything for granted – despite his amazing record.

“This is Cam’s second final loss in a row and he is due to win one soon. He is a very good bowler and will be there or around next year as well,” he said.

Danny came to Jamberoo Bowling Club in 1977 as its green-keeper and it was two years before he entered the singles competition, winning his first title in 1982 after downing popular clubman Peter “1066” Hastings.

“That win was my most memorable, put I still remember the 1985 final when I copped a 31-13 thrashing by Ray Hall. Ray really played well that day and it bought me back to earth a bit,” he said.

His 13 titles have come in rushes at times, with one period seeing him win four on the trot, while there were also four titles in five years, showing his amazing consistency.

Danny was quick to realise the support he receives from his wife Jenny who is always there for barracking for him.

“Sometimes I think she is the only one on my side as some people would probably like to see the title shared around,” Danny said with a smile.
