Crusty Demons riders (back) signed autographs for fans at Yellowrock Mini Cycle Club, at West Dapto last week. The Crusty crew arrived on Harleys and took time out from their busy schedules to entertain some future racers. Pictured in the middle (back) is Scary Mary, the first ever female Crusty Demon. Her aim is to be the best female FMX rider in the world and encourage more girls to enjoy the sport.
Mad Mike for the fans
Mad Mike Jones is known as the greatest showman of them all. The veteran of the Crusty Demons, the Kiama Independent went behind the scenes.
How was it to meet young local kids? Its always great to meet and hang out with local people. I love Australia, the people are just so laid back. Its good for them to meet the riders and we signed autographs.
Do you miss racing? Yeah I do, I raced in Australia since 1981 and the last time I think was in 1995 where I won the Supercross at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
I have been competing in jumping competitions since but the judging is inconsistent. I love the Crusty Tour as we can do what we want.
You do what you want?
The crowd comes to see us so we give the fans what they want. I usually crash due to getting pumped by the crowd and testing my limits.
Is the touring hard?
We are here for ten weeks so it is hard being away from family for so long. Australia is my favourite country to visit by far, the people are down to earth and easy to talk to.
Do you just show up and jump?
We all practice around 2-3 hours a day for 4 days of the week. The rest is spent travelling
What makes the time go faster during the travelling?
Im always trying to come up with new jumps, I plan them and then give them a try, some work, some dont.
Any other sport?
I love Ice Hockey, Seth (A Crusty rider famous for having a titanium plate in his head from a riding accident, who also dislikes small jumps) would be the best player on tour. We play when we get a chance and its always fun.
What does the future hold for Mad Mike Jones?
Im turning 40 and plan to just keep doing what I love and that is to entertain.
Final thought?
I came here to Wollongong for the fans, and hopefully they go home a Mad Mike Jones fan
For the record, Mike did crash whilst attempting a crowd inspired jump, we wish him a speedy recovery, thank him for his time and hope the fans enjoyed the show
