THERE will be a concert on Monday to celebrate the arrival of the symbols of World Youth Day, the Cross and Icon, in Kiama.

The Cross and Icon arrived in Australia last July and have visited hundreds of Australian towns and cities.

The Journey of the Cross and Icon is a lead up to WYD, which is the single-largest gathering of youth that Australia has seen – 500,000 youth are expected to attend the week-long celebrations in Sydney in July.

The Kiama celebrations for World Youth Day will begin with a service at Ss Peter and Paul Church, when the symbols arrive at 4.30pm.

This will be followed by a pilgrimage around the Blowhole that will include schoolchildren.

This pilgrimage will end at Hindmarsh Park, where there will be a concert starting at 6pm showcasing the talents of a number of performers from the community.

The concert has been organised by 19-year-old Loretta Marlan, who was also the runner-up in this year’s Kiama showgirl competition. She has mustered a variety of artists of all ages, who will perform songs on the theme of hope and forgiveness.

The line-up includes Unessential Notes, Loretta’s own group Three Girls That Sing, Pinstripe, John Littrich and Stan Jarrett, Joel and Rhiannon Robbards, Dogmatics, Cath Ferguson, Jo Knott and Inappropriate.

There will be a barbecue during the concert, with all proceeds going towards helping local young people attend the events in Sydney in July.

The message stick will be presented at the concert.

The Cross and Icon and Message Stick will then be carried to Black Beach at 7.30pm for an hour of quiet reflection with candles and music.

At the same time the entries to an art competition will be displayed in the Old Fire Station Gallery in Terralong St. Many local businesses have sponsored prizes to cover the many categories.

Kiama Council has assisted the Journey of the Cross and Icon Committee with a grant of $250.

Ss Peter & Paul Parish appreciates the continued support of the Kiama Independent in promoting the World Youth Day Journey of the Cross, Icon and Message Stick.
