Kiama Councillor Brendon Comber came dressed as a pirate for last weeks Kiama Council meeting.
DRESSED as though he had just moored the Black Pearl in Storm Bay, Kiama Councillor Brendon Comber sat through last Tuesdays Kiama Council meeting in a pirate costume, much to the amusement of his colleagues.
While other male councillors turned out in the regular collar and tie, Mr Comber opted for a frilly shirt, pirate hat, large gold earring, sash and a mock sword in a holster.
I was just trying to have a bit of fun. The radio station Triple J has a national Talk like a pirate day and I was just taking part, he said. I wanted to dress up last year but I forgot.
I went down to the harbour and had some fish and chips dressed like this and got a couple of weird looks. A few people knew why I was doing it but a lot of the others just laughed.
Mr Comber said he had no qualms about dressing up to attend a council meeting.
No, not really, he laughed. I thought it would just be a bit of fun, I hope thats what everyone else thought as well. Some of the directors seemed a little puzzled but when I told them what was going on they just laughed.
Kiama Mayor Sandra McCarthy said she saw Mr Combers antics as nothing more than a bit of fun.
It was a one off thing, she said.
Although he was dressed like a pirate he was still neatly dressed.
When he arrived I was a little confused as to what was going on, but once he explained I was fine with it.
Councillor Comber is chairman of the youth committee and I think this may have been his way of bringing to council part of the youth culture.
Councillor Warren Steel agreed with the Mayor, saying from time to time council needs this sort of thing to liven it up a little.
I think councillors take themselves a bit serious, he said.
I see it as just a bit of fun.
