Community input critical in revising housing plans

“Community input critical’ in revising housing plans

February 25, 2010

Section: Opinion

I AM writing in relation to the Housing of NSW development site at Belinda Street, Gerringong.

I can advise that the design of the development has been modified based on submissions from neighbours, local council and the review of independent planners.

These modifications address the primary concerns raised by residents, including those of noise, privacy and visual impact.

The site was initially proposed for seniors housing.

In the light of local staff comments about the incline of the road and local services, this site will now be used for general housing for people who need less support services.

All decisions have been reviewed at length by a Housing NSW steering committee, which confirmed that there is a need for affordable housing in Gerringong and surrounding areas, particularly for smaller units where the private rental market cannot meet the need.

There are 180 households in the Gerringong area and surrounds waiting for public housing.

Providing housing which meets local demand and tenants needs is a priority for Housing NSW.

Local staff and community input have been critical to helping Housing NSW to revise decisions to ensure this development best met local needs.
