FOUR local children have been awarded for their creativity after winning the Fave Food Focus competition run by Kiama Council, Dairy Australia and Australian Landcare Magazine.
Children from each of the schools in the municipality were asked to get creative with their favourite food and think about where it comes from.
They could enter a photograph or a short story that represented this theme.
Isaac Bridger, 12, of Jamberoo, won the photographic category with a photo of himself drinking a glass of milk while a cow nudges his elbow.
Six-year-old Lachlan Moss was the runner-up with a gorgeous photo featuring his baby sister, Lauren, messily eating yoghurt in a field of cows.
In the short story section, siblings Darby and Clay Condon, of Gerroa, put their talents together to come out with the winning entry.
They entered a funny story about their mum’s homemade scones, a famous photographer and a dirty window.
The runner-up was 11-year-old Gabi Visser with a story entitled Dreamy Creamy Ice-cream and Chocolate.
This was about her love of chocolate and milkshakes and the milkshake-maker her great-grandmother bought her so she could enjoy them every day.
The four winners received prize packs from Kiama Mayor Sandra McCarthy last week, which included passes to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Jamberoo Action Park and the newly opened Illawarra Fly.
They also received a showbag from Dairy Australia and South Coast Dairy packs.
“It’s wonderful to see children engaging with fresh, healthy foods and appreciating where it comes from,” Cr McCarthy said.
“I think community health, nutrition and physical exercise, especially for our young people, is vital in building a strong community.”
