REMEMBER to wear shoes might be the advice Curves manager Charmaine Wheatley would suggest after winning the Kiama Independent Business Person of the Year for the Illawarra and South Coast Local Business Awards last Wednesday.
“All I could think about while on stage was that I wasn’t wearing my shoes,” Ms Wheatley said.
After taking them off earlier in the night, she didn’t get a chance to put them back on during the excitement of hearing her name called.
Ms Wheatley has gone from cleaner to manager in three years when former Curves owner Wendy Davis handed her the reigns.
It was then up to her to either sink or swim, but fortunately Ms Wheatley had a philosophy she’s followed since living back home in South Africa when she was running her own business.
“If you work hard you can do anything,” she said. “And you have to remember that the most important people in your business are your staff.”
* Keep an eye out in next week’s Kiama Independent for a wrap-up of the business awards and a rundown of all category winners.
