THE Kiama community welcomed 20 new citizens with open arms on Monday.
Those who had chosen to take up the values and obligations of being an Australian citizen took part in the council’s special Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony at Gerrin-gong Town Hall.
Last year’s Australia Day Sport Award winner Merv King addressed the group and their friends and family who had come to lend support.
Mr King spoke about why he was proud to be an Australian as well as imparting some Aussie slang.
Mayor Sandra McCarthy then officially welcomed the participants before leading them in the pledge of commitment to their new country.
Afterwards they were each presented with certificates of citizenship, a Captain Cook bottlebrush plant and a voting enrolment form to help them fulfil one of their new obligations as Australians.
