Cafe smoking ban a slight on civil rights

Regarding the article “No smoking al fresco” (January 6). I wish to state that Kiama Council is infringing on people’s rights.
It’s about time the council got off its high horse and did other things around the area for residents and holidaymakers when it rains as there is nothing for children to do.
As for Cr Ben van der Wijngaart, if he doesn’t like smoking, he has options.
Does he intend on banning wine etc at these BYO cafes also as they will kill much faster than a smoke?
Business will fall away as people won’t bother – they’ll just get takeaway maybe?
Also, the council better think about the next election as there are a lot of smokers who are voters.
I feel sorry for café owners as it’s hard enough keeping afloat. This will only make business worse if people can’t sit and have a coffee and cigarette in peace.
When the holiday period is over, much of the cash will stop.
So think before you pass this stupid idea, it’s unfair and most people who smoke are considerate to other diners.

As a moderate smoker I agree with the concept of a smoke free zone, nothing worse than sitting down to a meal and having smoke billow around you, I think that most people would agree that health is paramount to peoples need to sate there habit

Mrs.C. Watkins Rather than remark on opinions expressed in your letter I make a plea for you to educate yourself on the effects of passive and non passive smoking.
