Building a great reputation

For Kiama couple Leisa and Paul Kirk, interior design and construction has been a life-long passion.

“Paul has always been interested in architecture – he’s always got the camera out, taking pictures of houses, interiors and colours, so it’s definitely passion driven,” Mrs Kirk said.

After seven years in the industry and with a team of just five, the pair’s business Paul L Kirk Pty Ltd Construction and Design has had success at the HIA CSR NSW Housing Awards.

Considered the State’s most distinguished housing awards, Leisa was named Business Partner of the Year and the company was selected as a finalist in the renovation/addition under $300,000 for alterations to a property on Bonaira St, Kiama.

Mrs Kirk said receiving the awards was definitely a surprise, particularly in light of their competition.

“We were the only builders on the South Coast nominated and we’re only a small business,” she said.

“We were up against large-scale designers from Mosman, North Sydney and Hunters Hill who have big budgets and big teams.”

The couple received their finalist nomination for the redesign of a 1950’s fibro home that went from old-fashioned to beach cottage chic.

“We wanted to capture the essence of beachside living,” she said.

“The owners are retirees who often have their family visit, so they wanted to revamp it and turn it into a casual, beachside home that made you want to go in, take your shoes off and relax.”

Mrs Kirk said her win in the Business Partner of the Year category was a huge achievement and helped to further boost the company’s reputation.

“Paul was too busy to do all the busy administration work, so I got involved to help out about three years ago,” she said.

“The award recognises the people behind the scenes – I’m not necessarily out with clients, I handle the marketing and business side of things.

“I’m really hoping that it will raise the professional profile of the business and show our commitment to quality craftsmanship.”

Mrs Kirk will now compete in the national Housing Awards to be held early next year.
