KIAMA Council has launched a new fundraising effort, which will result in the completion of the new Peace Park in Manning Street.
The hugely successful ‘buy a brick’ campaign, which resulted in $10,000 being raised towards the approximately $30,000 cost of Stage 1, has again been launched and the council’s manager of environment and health, Paul Czulowski, said he hoped Stage 2 would begin soon.
The brainchild of Kiama resident Winsome Barker, the park has become a show-piece, particularly in the warmer weather when the rose beds are in full bloom. The only drawback this year was the theft of several roses.
Mr Czulowski said stage 2 would include paths through to the adjoining Taylor Street, a new rock wall and gardens, more rose beds and another arbour, similar to the one behind the gazebo on Manning Street.
The Council has again approached Kiama Lions Cub for their support, which president Russell Fredericks said would be likely.
“We enjoyed getting our hands dirty last time and although it has to be ratified by our board, I would think we will be on board again this time,” Mr Fredericks said.
Mrs Barker said the success of the first ‘buy a brick’ campaign had given her a great deal of pleasure and she urged residents to get behind the program again.
“Each brick sold has your name or family name on it and is placed along the pathway for everyone to see. It is a wonderful memorial for past loved ones or a way of having your name remembered, along with supporting this beautiful park,” Mrs Barker said.
Forms pledging your support for the ‘buy a brick’ campaign are available from Kiama Council reception in Manning Street.
