THE JAMBEROO Born ’n’ Breds versus Blow Ins Australia Day Cricket match at Kevin Walsh Oval on Saturday was a typically rousing affair.
The Born ’n’ Breds batted first and proceeded confidently to the highest team score in the seven-year history of this annual match.
In reply, however the Blow Ins trumped their opponents’ score and passed the target with six wickets and five overs to spare.
There were some outstanding individual performances. The Asquith family (Richard, Mark and James) were the backbone of the Blow Ins batting.
Each scored the maximum 25 runs allowed under the rules of this unique event.
Best for Born ’n’ Breds with a withering spell of fast bowling was Greg Walsh.
The match was not without controversy. Umpire Ian “Bucknor” Harrison outraged some of his fellow Australians when he turned down a confident appeal for caught behind against one of the rampaging Asquiths.
Harrison, wired up to hear Randwick Races and eagerly anticipating the outcome of the protest in the fifth race, claimed not to hear a snick.
The Born ’n’ Breds thought the nick was loud enough to echo through the Minnamurra Rainforest. Controversy aside, the crowd enjoyed the thrilling play and athleticism that has come to typify this colourful event.
For the record, the Jamberoo Blow Ins 4-185 defeated the Jamberoo Born ’n’ Breds 184.
As a footnote to the clash, Walsh’s bowling action has been referred to the ICC for testing.
