THIS WEEK saw Kiama Rugby Club travel south to play Shoalhaven in all three grades plus the Blowhards.
The trip brought Kiama mixed results with second and third grades going down narrowly, while first grade scored an impressive win.
Saturday started with thirsty thirds putting on a courageous display, despite going down 9-7.
Kiama were short of numbers, with many of the boys playing out of position.
However, they dug deep and defended like champions, not allowing Shoalhaven to cross the line.
Kiama were led well by Mick "Swindel" Kent while young Michael "Frodo" Russell who tackled his heart out.
The final score was 9-7, despite Kiama scoring the lone try.
Kiama"s coaches were pleased with the defence, especially that of some of the young blokes.
Three points and player"s player went to Stevie at fullback, who was outstanding in attack, two points to Frodo and one point again to Lachie Payne.
Seconds faced a highly-enthusiastic Shoalhaven team who wanted to beat the defending premiers.
Unfortunately after a slow start Kiama couldn"t come back and snare a win, going down 14-12.
The hosts scored two early tries but from then on the boys knuckled down and started to play good rugby.
Kiama continued to attack Shoalhaven"s line, but a lack of discipline continued to give Benny King-Gee penalty goal attempts.
The boys defended well in the second half, with Nath Milthorpe putting on a couple of "bonecrushers" to lift the side.
Despite attacking the hosts" line for the last ten minutes, Kiama couldn"t score the decisive try.
Three points and player"s player went to Matty Taylor on the wing, two points to Jeff "Pig Dog" Mitchell and one point to Matty Archer at the back.
After weeks on anticipation, the first grade clash lived up to its billing with Kiama thumping their Shoalhaven rivals 34-3.
Kiama scored an early penalty goal before a great steal from Rooter saw Marto cross the line.
Kiama lifted again and scored another try before half time to give them a 17-3 lead at the break.
The second half saw Kiama score twice more thanks to Magic and Nugget.
The coaches were happy with the result and look forward to next week"s game, in which they have challenged the boys to improve once again.
Two points were shared by Daniel "Root" Redman and Craig William, who also picked up player"s player, while one point went to Mitch Payne.
Next week is big for Kiama, who play Avondale at Cow Park, afterwards is the annual Woody Dance.
Come along for the whole day, it"s sure to be a fantastic day of rugby and dancing.
Entry fee to the dance is $5 and there is a bar operating.
