AFTER teetering on the verge of national selection for five years, one of Kiamas favourite sons finally lived out a lifelong dream on Saturday night when he made his run-on debut for the Wallabies against the Springboks at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Scott Fava, who became the Kiama Rugby Clubs sixth Wallaby when he debuted off the bench last season against England, described Saturday nights game as absolutely superb saying the Wallabies record 49-0 win over the South Africans had still yet to really sink in.
It is so hard to describe really, said Scott.
After so long to finally get the chance to run out and start a game was unbelievable, he said.
We ran out of the sheds as a 22 and I made sure I was up the front to soak it all in. Running on to Suncorp and hearing a screaming crowd of 45,000 Australians roaring for you is something I will never forget.
During the anthem I was between (Daniel) Vickerman and (Stephen) Larkham and they were grabbing me so tight, just pumping me up and I was really emotional.
I have sung the anthem with the boys a few times when I have been in the 22 before but this was something else, I could not even hear myself sing and I was really emotional, I was choking back the tears.
Fava said the crowd response left him absolutely pumped to tear in to the Tri-nations match.
After the anthem the emotion just turned into a feeling of let me at these guys, he said.
Everyone was at the same level, really fired up. We knew what we had to do, our scrum had copped a bit of a barraging in the papers after the All Blacks game so we were pretty focused on making sure that and the lineout delivery was on the money.
We started really well and there was such a positive feeling amongst the boys, everyone was so keen to do a number on them.
Watching Fava in the crowd was his parents, parents in law, an aunty and two of his sisters who had all made the trip up from Kiama. Scotts father Joe described the night as mind boggling saying he was unbelievably proud to see his son have such a positive impact on the game.
I definitely started to have doubts whether he would ever get an opportunity, especially with Eddie Jones in charge, he said.
I am so proud of the tenacity and determination he has shown to make his way into the side, he showed it all again the other night, it was amazing. He has never given up and he has just kept on battling to make sure he has realised his goals.
I think having to work so hard has made him both a better player and a person.
He is a Kiama boy at heart, he just loves the place.
What he has done is open the way up for kids down here, he has shown it is all possible if you put your mind too it.
