THE glitz and glamour of this year’s Melbourne Cup may have already faded, but one lucky Kiama Downs man is still smiling.
Alex Williamson won the Minnamurra Lions Club Boxed Trifecta and was presented with his $1000 cheque on Friday.
Club president Bruce Mclean and treasurer Kevin Bolack were delighted to present Mr Williamson with the cheque on Friday afternoon at Kiama Golf Club.
“This is our first foray into such a fundraising idea as this Boxed Trifecta,” Mr Mclean said.
“We are really happy with the money that was raised.”
Already Minnamurra Lions has allocated funds to assist the Paralympian Squad to travel to Beijing for the Games next year.
On a local level, the Club has donated a prize to Kiama High School for a School Service award.
The Lions Club also built a wheelchair ramp for a gravely ill Minnamurra woman so that her husband can take her out of the house.
“We are frequently being asked to give assistance to people,” Mr Bolack said.
“We are delighted to be able to help people. But to do this we are always looking for ways to raise the money. This Melbourne Cup trifecta was a great idea and we enjoyed selling the $2 tickets to the local people.”
Minnamurra Lions Club meets each Tuesday fortnight at Kiama Golf Club and welcomes those who are interested in joining.
Mr Mclean also offered the club’s services to those in need and would welcome inquires.
